Premier League News: Hannibal Banned for Misconduct; Guardiola Insists 'Defence Must Get Better'

From the world of English football developments, a notable player was given a significant ban, a manager has singled out a defender's errors to prove a point, and Pep Guardiola has called for backline betterment after a chaotic win.

1. Mejbri Handed Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' player Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-game suspension and a financial fine for improper behaviour during a recent fixture versus Leeds United. The Football Association confirmed the player was referred an independent disciplinary panel after an incident where he spat in the direction of visiting supporters around the 67th point of a 2-0 victory for Burnley.

A release explained: “A disciplinary panel has punished Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri due to his actions during their top-flight match against Leeds of 18 October. The charge was that he behaved against the laws of the game and/or in an improper manner by engaging in offensive and/or unacceptable conduct through spitting towards the area of Leeds United fans.”

The statement added, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game suspension and £15,000 following a hearing. The panel's written reasons for the sanction are to be released in due course.” The team, currently 19th in the standings, travel to 12th-placed Newcastle this Saturday.

2. Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Mistakes to Make a Point

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is no an issue for his team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not stop him from playing a bad game during a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the division, rejected the idea that mentality was a factor in their poor result. He presented his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's oldest player on the pitch, who produced an error-strewn performance at the back.

“People always talk about a lack of experience when we drop points,” the coach said. “After we defeated Barcelona, the draw with Arsenal, nobody was mentioning older personnel. I understand that if we lose, people are constantly looking for the reason why, but I think why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it was because we just weren't at our best.”

He added, “Who was the most senior player for us on the pitch? It was Tosin. Was he any good? So, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 men, they were not good enough.”

Guardiola Insists Defence 'Has to Get Better'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have taken lessons from a recent scare against Fulham and the game is now forgotten. City survived for a 5-4 win during a incredible encounter at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about 60 minutes gone.

This followed they resisted a comeback to win 3-2 in the prior fixture, prompting further doubts regarding whether City possess the defensive steel enough to mount a title challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s forgotten,” he said. “Valuable learnings, hopefully. In the Premier League, at all the clubs, you have to take onboard both good and bad in the good things and bad things and think of the next one.”

“Naturally I am worried,” he admitted. “We are trying to understand what happened, to not concede the goals. After conceding three scored against Leeds, and the five goals against Fulham you can see the two versions, correct? So, always we have done plenty of positive things. Yet the number of shots on target did Leeds ? Three? Scored two. It’s not bad. And attempts for Fulham have? Five, six? So, the average of shots conceded we can see too high. We must improve.”

4. Newcastle Focus New Defenders' Contracts

Newcastle United's recently appointed football chief, Ross Wilson, has made contract negotiations involving key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman at the top of his agenda for the club. Wilson arrived from Nottingham Forest in October and is pleased that playmaker Sandro Tonali is on a deal extending to 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson free to focus on talks for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s current deal set to expire in 2027 and the latter’s in 2028, Newcastle's talks are being treated with some urgency.

“The initial few days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation was significantly more secure than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club wishes to renew Tino’s deal and we wants to renew Sven Botman’s as well. These talks are underway.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman for the home game against Burnley this Saturday, with the defender likely to remain sidelined for at least another week.

Nuno Says Paquetá Returns Against Brighton

West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to start for the side play Brighton this Sunday, after serving a ban following a red card he received Liverpool.

“That incident is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it will not happen again because he personally admitted his mistake. We spoke about it internally. I believe it is over and will not be repeated.”

He also understands the significant strain facing his team, who are in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's matches. “We cannot ignore it,” he admitted. “It is a reality. We have to confront it. We are fighting for survival. We can't shy away from it.”

6. Arteta Impressed by No 9 Stand-in Merino

Mikel Merino may keep his place leading the line for Arsenal centre-forward despite the club's usual frontmen are fit again. Merino has been playing as an emergency No 9 due to injuries to Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino found the net for the first goal versus Brentford before assisting Bukayo Saka for their second in a 2-0 win which preserved {their|
